Prevention & Treatment of Fleas in Kittens and Cats
(Entry paragraph partially removed on request of client)
Eventually, I realized that there was a critical step missing in my plan. Flea and tick prevention goes hand-in-hand with treatment since fleas and ticks don’t go away after a single good bath or a dose of medication.
The Holistic Approach?
An approach that includes treatment of all the cats in the home, any other pets in the home, the carpet and the yard is the best and most “whole” treatment and prevention plan. You might be able to stop a small infestation, but if the cat encounters fleas again in the upholstery, flooring, yard or on other animals – the entire plan will fail.
Getting Fleas out of the Environment
These steps should rid your entire home of fleas and eggs:
If you have animals other than cats, make sure to take care of this problem with appropriate methods for the individual animals. When you are ready to remove fleas from your cat, a flea-comb will be an invaluable tool. You can remove the majority of fleas and flea-eggs by combing your cat slowly and carefully with a flea comb dampened in a mix of water and a few drops of Dawn dish soap. If you also find ticks, remove them by grasping the head with tweezers and pulling the tick straight up and out. You want to remove the tick whole and not leave the head behind, so be careful not to squeeze the body. If the head comes off, use the tweezers to remove it. If you find more ticks than you can remove or if you cannot remove any heads, you will need to have a veterinarian’s help to avoid infection
Continued Prevention
If you continue to have flea and tick issues after these steps, you may need to see your vet to get prescription products. Fipronil or Imidacloprid can work well and are far superior to any over-the-counter fleas spray or drops. In general, it is best to avoid over-the-counter products as some can do more harm than good.
Maintenance
To treat and prevent fleas on an ongoing basis in situations where all these steps don’t get rid of everything, sometimes an oral medication will be your best option. Appropriate medications are very effective at killing existing fleas and ticks as well as preventing hatchlings from maturing. You always want to use a medication that is prescribed for cats. Some medications for dogs or other pets are toxic to cats. You also need to be very (end removed at request of client)...

Getting Fleas out of the Environment
These steps should rid your entire home of fleas and eggs:
- Vacuum your home every day until you’ve seen no active pests for at least a week
- Wash or vacuum all pet bedding daily for the same period, and wash any human bedding that pets can use
- For a natural and safe treatment of the yard and carpets, you can obtain food-grade diatomaceous earth and use it on the carpets and the lawn. This product will cut off the air supply for the fleas and prevent hatchlings from surviving
